The Mona Lisa Touch (MLT) is the latest laser treatment that is improving the health of menopausal women.  As the Baby Boomer population is aging, expectations have changed with regards to how women are dealing with menopause and it’s various symptoms and side effects. The Baby Boomers are aging better than previous generations and eager to find treatments that are innovative and helpful to maintain and improve the integrity of skin tissue. The Mona Lisa Touch has become a leader in this movement of aging well and provides women with a non-hormonal, non-pharmaceutical solution to vaginal dryness, pain with intercourse, chronic yeast infections and urinary incontinence. This fractional CO2 laser treatment requires 3-4 office visits and has virtually no downtime. Patients are so excited to regain vaginal tissue health and stimulate interest in intimacy again! Another patient population that is benefiting from this laser treatment are post chemotherapy and radiation patients and patients that are taking hormone blocking therapy (Tamoxifin) This treatment is ideal for this population because it mechanically alters the health of the vaginal tissue without the risk of hormones or medications.

The Science Behind Mona Lisa Touch

The MLT is a fractional CO2 laser treatment that targets the vaginal tissue and the area of the pelvic floor. Each treatment stimulates increased blood flow and vascularization to the vaginal wall and urethra. The trauma created by the laser stimulates the body’s immune response to replace and replenish the tissue with new collagen and elastin. The result is soft, well lubricated, well-nourished tissue that has improved pH and increased strength. As the tissue heals, patients are excited to report that mild to moderate urinary incontinence has improved and intimacy is painless and actually enjoyable!

Is it painful?

Thankfully, the Mona Lisa touch is relatively painless. Many patients experience mild discomfort during the treatment but have resolution of pain within 10 minutes.

Who is a candidate for this treatment?

Women who are peri-menopausal, menopausal or post-menopausal are excellent candidates for this therapy. Due to changes in estrogen that occur after 40, women are reporting vaginal and urinary symptoms that can be treated with the Mona Lisa Touch. Cancer patients and people who have experienced changes in vaginal health after chemotherapy and radiation are also seeing excellent results after this treatment. Lastly, many women report mild to moderate urinary frequency, urgency and stress incontinence after multiple vaginal deliveries. Many of these patients have had success in improving urinary incontinence using the Mona Lisa Touch laser.
